“For this reason we must always return to the Scriptures to find the answer to this question: what is the true form of God’s Church? For in the Word of God we find an exact witness of the will of God in all He approves and disapproves.” – Pierre Viret
One Thousand Thoughts About Church…#702
“And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.” (Ephesians 4:11-16 ESV)

” Commitment to a community of Christians involves much more than just being there, but it certainly does not involve less than this. In order to be dedicated to a church—not just the church as institution but the church as people—you need to be present so you can be with people and actively engage with them. The good churchman knows that every time the church gathers, there are opportunities to pursue, to minister, to bless, and he is eager to take full advantage of every one of these times.” – Tim Challies

“The highest and sweetest of all human fellowship, out of heaven, is the fellowship of a gospel church formed after the model of the Holy Scriptures” – Simeon Ashe
One Thousand Thoughts About Church…#705
“When the devil cannot by violence destroy the Church, he endeavours to poison it; when he cannot with Samson’s fox-tails, set the corn on fire, then he sows tares; as he labours to destroy the peace of the Church, by division, so the truth of it by error.” – Simeon Ashe

“The pastor is called to feed the sheep, even if the sheep do not want to be fed. He is certainly not to become an entertainer of goats. Let goats entertain goats, and let them do it out in goatland. You will certainly not turn goats into sheep by pandering to their goatishness.” – William Still
One Thousand Thoughts About Church…#707
“Such a shame is it for apostles and ministers of Christ to hold their peace, that if they be silent, the very stones shall preach against them. The walls, windows, pavements of churches shall cry out against such pastors, that undertake the office of shepherd, and feed Christ’s flock with nothing but air.” – Thomas Adams
One Thousand Thoughts About Church…#708
“Far from being burdensome, our nourishment in the Lord’s Supper should be cause for joy and gratitude…In churches where the Lord’s Supper is celebrated weekly, the people have generally come to treasure this opportunity to ‘taste and see that the Lord is good’ (Ps.34:8). Far from being mundane and ordinary, the supper has come to enrich the faith of those receiving, who increasingly find themselves looking forward to each Resurrection Day with eager anticipation.” – David T. Koyzis

“For if a minister is not convinced of the divine truth of the word he preaches, his preaching loses all authority, influence, and power. If he is not able to bring a message from God, who then gives him the right to act on behalf of people of like nature with himself? Who gives him the freedom to put himself in the pulpit [a few feet] above them, to speak to them about the highest interest of their soul and life and even to proclaim to them their eternal weal or woe? Who would dare, who would be able to do this, unless he has a word of God to proclaim?” – Herman Bavinck
One Thousand Thoughts About Church…#710
“In Ephesians 4:11-13, we are told that the ascended Christ has granted gifts to His church in ministers of the Word (apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers) for the purpose of equipping the church for the work of ministry in order to build it up until spiritual maturity is attained. In other words, the ascended Christ leads His church through these ministers of the Word called pastors (elders) who teach God’s Word. That Christ leads His church through human shepherds is confirmed in 1 Peter 5:1-5 when the elders are exhorted to shepherd the flock of God under their care faithfully . . . and when the chief Shepherd (Jesus) appears they will be rewarded. ” – Marcus Glover

“A thing most expedient and necessary that every Kirk [Church] have a Bible in English, and that the people be commanded to convene and hear the plain reading and interpretation of the Scripture as the Kirk [Church] shall appoint…Each Book of the Bible should be begun and read through in order to the end, and there should be no skipping and divigation from place to place of Scrpture, be it in reading or be it in preaching.” – John Knox’s First Book of Discipline (1561)
11 Things About Biblical Discernment
- Discernment is an aspect of wisdom, prudence, maturity, and thriving as a Christian.
- “until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood…so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes….we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ” – Eph 4
- “And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent” – Phil 1
- “The wisdom of the prudent is to discern his way, but the folly of fools is deceiving.” – Pro.14
- We need to be discerning because lies abound.
- “The wisdom of the prudent is to discern his way, but the folly of fools is deceiving.” – Pro.14
- “ so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.” – Eph. 4
- “Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. …Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.” – Eph. 5
- Discernment is not only about rejecting what is wrong, but also holding fast to and treasuring what is right.
- “…but test everything; hold fast what is good. (1 Th.5)
- “try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord” (Eph.5)
- “And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent” (Phil 1)
- Discernment relates to our sanctification, exercising biblical discernment pleases God and not being discerning displeases Him.
- “And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the
day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.” (Phi.1) - “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Rom. 12)
- “Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.” – Eph. 4
- Discernment is aided by practice or, put differently, exercising our discernment.
- “But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.” (Heb.5)
- Outside of Christ, people are by nature undiscerning due to unbelief and spiritual blindness.
- “The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.” (I Cor. 2)
- “They know not, nor do they discern, for he has shut their eyes, so that they cannot see, and their hearts, so that they cannot understand.” – Isaiah 44
- “For they are a nation void of counsel, and there is no understanding in them. If they were wise, they would understand this; they would discern their latter end!” (Deu.32)
- Discernment depends on the renewal of the mind, or put differently the transformation of our mind.
- “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Rom. 12)
- There can be an extra measure of discernment that is a gift from God for the service of his people.
- “Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?” – (King Solomon in I Kings 3)
- “to another the ability to distinguish between spirits” (1 Cor. 12)
- The officers of the church are to equip church members to discernment.
- “And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.” – Eph. 4
- Discernment must not be merely a matter of human reasoning, things must be weighed in light of God’s revelation in Hs Word.
- “Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.” – Acts 17
- God is not only concerned about how we discern, but also how we react to our discernment. When we must respond to something, we must use grace-filled speech.
- “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.” – Col. 4

One Thousand Thoughts About Church…#712
“The Lord Jesus is the Head of the Church, which is composed of all his true disciples, and in Him is invested supremely all power for its government. According to his commandment, Christians are to associate themselves into particular societies or churches; and to each of these churches he hath given needful authority for administering that order, discipline and worship which he hath appointed. The regular officers of a Church are Bishops, or Elders, and Deacons. ” – The Abstract of Principles
