Rhyme and Rhythm In Poetry

“The problem with many rhyming poems is that the poet is restricted to such a degree by the nature of the rhyme that he is forced to put words in for the sake of the rhyme. His creativity is stunted and restricted. He no longer can allow his creativity to flow free and say what is nagging to be written…This is not a knock against rhyming poetry, it is a knock against those who feel that it is not poetry unless it rhymes. Some people forget that poetry is an art form and that a poet should be free to express himself like a painter or a musician would..A poem does not have to rhyme to have rhythm.” – Robert G. Anstey inĀ The Art of Poetry
