Literature

  • Salman Rushdie, author of the notorious The Satanic Verses, has a video about what it’s been like to live after his death sentence for his “thought crimes”
  • First Things has an interesting article called Brilliantly Bad Books about Amanda McKittrick Ros (HT: Ian)

Theology

Foreign Policy

  • The U.S. is now threatening to reconsider giving aid to the newly installed government of Iraq, since Iraq is letting Iran use its airspace to support the Assad government in Syria. It appears Iraq and Iran are getting a bit more cozy. Which isn’t surprising, since the U.S.’s action to remove Saddam and his government, basically tipped the balance of power away from the Sunnis (who were against Iran) and towards the Shiites (which are more sympathetic to Iran).  One can only imagine that, deep down inside, Iran was very happy to see what the U.S. did in Iraq. Iran got to watch a longstanding “neighbor enemy” turned into a semi-ally overnight. All in all, the U.S. administration must be very frustrated that this $850+ billion project on creating a new Iraq has not created a compliant Iraq.
