Chelydra serpentina

My eyes caught an armoured vehicle
treading torpidly toward the pond
and as I stopped
it had a still expression
saying I ought to move on.

Note: This poem is about a meeting with the Common Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina) pictured here. I saw it at Brunet Park (LaSalle, Ontario) in April 2010.
